Being A Good _________ Is Not Enough

As I was going through some of my Google Reader feeds and WatchThatPage results, I noticed this McKenna Long media mention called "Being a Good Associate is Not Enough." The story is not new, but one that we all need to remember from time to time. "Being good at your job is not enough." It is like I used to tell my law school students when I was an adjunct prof - "If you identify all the issues, and give me all the 'IRAC' answers, you earn a C."

For those of you that do a good job at being a law firm librarian, but are looking to expand beyond the basic definition of what makes a good law librarian, Competitive Intelligence research may be an opportunity for you. In these times of change, you can look at it as an opportunity to hunker down and try to ride out the storm, or as an opportunity to shed old processes and take on new challenges.

Talk with your Partners, Marketing, Business Development and lateral recruiting teams and develop the relationship to let them know you and your department are valuable resources in helping them accomplish their objectives. If you don't know where to start, there are some names to on the left-hand side of this blog that would be more than happy to point you in the right direction.

The Intelligent Intertubes: A Weekly Roundup

Here's your weekly roundup of the CIosphere:

Don't miss out on a great presentation: JR Atkins, Chris Vary, and fabulous fellow CI blogger Emily Cunningham Rushing will discuss "Using Social Media to Get Ahead," on September 22 at Haynes & Boone in Dallas.

The Creative Commons provides a thought provoking, albeit not quite definitive, definition of non-commercial use. The Law Library discusses.

Two CI Gurus have been busy - and generous - this past week! August Jackson posted the slides from his guest lecture on Competitive Analysis at the John Hopkins University, while Arik Johnson provided slides for his Web 2.0 presentation at the Milwaukee SCIP chapter. Excellent presentations, thanks for sharing!

Open espionage or just a blabbermouthing jerkhead? CI pros were abuzz this week after O'Melveny Myers's strategic plan was plastered all over Above the Law.

Law Central tells US that the grass isn't greener, and the fees aren't better, on the other side of the pond.

Efficiency, anyone? This week's installment of the ABA Journal's ongoing coverage of alternative fee arrangements discusses Seyfarth Shaw's Six Sigma implementation. Who knew improving processes could save clients 50%?

Do you have blogs/podcasts/sites that you'd like included in the weekly roundup? I'd be ever so delighted if you could send your suggestions to ssanksto@quarles.com.

And hey, Intertubes! Do you have a blog? Perhaps a blog that talks about CI stuff? Then for Heaven's sake, leave a comment and promote yourself shamelessly - or your friend, or some stranger that you think had a pretty good post!
